A foam mattress may be a form of foam or it may be a combination of laminated foams or it may be memory foam and any and all of which may be called a foam mattress. Foam is generally a spongy collection of cellular materials and may be made from natural latex or it may be made from urethane like polyurethane. A memory foam or viscoelectric material is foam that retains its memory of the form as you sleep on it and the mattress conforms to the shape of your body. It may be low density foam that is pressure sensitive and it forms to your body from the pressure of the body or actually decompresses under pressure.

When that pressure is released from the mattress the foam reshapes and reforms itself to its original form. This type of foam is less expensive than memory foam or high density foam but it is still a perfectly good mattress to buy. It is also a heavier mattress than high density foam. A high density foam mattress will soften when the body lays on it. It reacts to body heat and forms around the body shape. It can mold to the body form in minutes. This is a more expensive foam and also has a longer life span.

The normal thickness of a foam mattress is three to four inches. A high dollar foam such as the most expensive memory foam will be more than four inches thick. The thicker the foam the more the body sinks into the mattress. The pressure of foam is measured by pounds per cubic foot. A good mattress made from foam will help relieve pressure points on the body when you lay on it. Some people believe these mattresses get too hot but foam may also be cooler that a conventional mattress depending on the type of foam it is made from.

When you are looking at new mattresses you will need to consider just how much room you have available for the bed frame and mattress no matter what the material is made from. You also need to remember the number of people sleeping in the bed because each person has to have enough room to sleep comfortably. Then you have to consider how the person sleeping on the mattress sleeps because different firmness or softness is generally recommended for different sleepers. A foam mattress may not be the best mattress for a sleeper who tosses and turns constantly all night long as that person doesn’t really benefit from the body molding properties of a high density foam as they are tossing and turning too much to let the foam do its trick.

If you sleep on your side you generally will need to purchase a soft mattress. Foam is a good choice here. If you sleep on your back you should choose a medium firm mattress or foam will work too. A stomach sleeper will generally sleep best on a firm mattress or high density foam.
